In the 1970s, as the Sheraton Kona rose along the coast, bright construction lights illuminated the bay. The glow drew plankton to the surface, and with them came manta rays. Today, that happy accident has become one of Hawai‘i Island’s most extraordinary underwater encounters, drifting in the dark as manta rays glide effortlessly beneath you.
